Gilsonite Pavement Sealers

Gilsonite’s proven properties make high-performance solvent-based and emulsion pavement sealers dry quicker, look better and last longer. As a natural antioxidant, it allows pavement sealers to stay blacker longer. Gilsonite’s unique molecular fractions rejuvenate the pavement being sealed. The strong bonding properties of Gilsonite help weatherproof the sealer.

Making longer-lasting pavement helps the environment. By rejuvenating pavements with recycled asphalt instead of replacing them, there is a proven significant reduction in energy used as well as a reduction in required resources. For further information, please contact us.

Gilsonite Oil-Based Sealer

Gilsonite asphalt sealer

Gilsonite re-saturates and rejuvenates blacktop surfaces, forming a lustrous jet black finish. This driveway coating protects against moisture and frost damage – your pavement’s worst enemies. Gilsonite Asphalt Seal is the easiest of the pavement sealers to apply, and it gives a deep, black finish with a bit of sheen. Unlike water based sealers, it will not be damaged by freezing weather, nor will it wash off if caught by a rain shower before completely dry.
Recommended for residential blacktop driveways, parking lots, walkways, and other exterior asphalt pavement surfaces.

Preparation: Surface must be clean and dry. Thoroughly sweep with a stiff broom. Cracks larger than hairline should be filled with a crack sealer. Crack sealer must cure before applying pavement sealer.

Application: Sealcoating may be sprayed or rolled onto the surface using a medium to the heavy roller. Apply as thinly as possible, not allowing puddles to form in low lying areas. Approximate coverage rate 80-100 square feet per gallon depending on porosity of the pavement. Do not the thin product.

The coating should dry in 24 hours or less, depending on temperature and humidity. Apply when the temperature is above 50°F. Weather and thickness affect drying time. Do not allow traffic until coating has fully dried.
Note: 20 GALLON MINIMUM APPLIES TO THIS MATERIAL.

Gilsonite Sealer

Gilsonite Pavement Sealer

Gilsonite sealer applies and looks very shiny once applied. After a few weeks, it will look black and velvety. Gilsonite Sealer or asphaltum is a natural asphalt sealer, the resinous hydrocarbon found in Iran the long time ago. This sealer is composed of hard gilsonite asphalt resin; it adds seals and protects the pavement against the effects of weathering.

Gilsonite Sealer Usage in Streets and Highways

When applied to asphalt surfaces as a Preservation Treatment, Gilsonite sealer penetrates into the asphalt matrix and fills micro-voids and toughens all asphalt surfaces. The high molecular density of Gilsonite Resin creates an impervious shell and becomes integral within the surface of the pavement, allowing all types of pavement to better withstand heavy traffic, plows, while greatly reducing the effects of the aging process. Gilsonite sealer keeps pavements pliable, flexible, and strong. Using Gilsonite sealer will reduce the amount of maintenance required and the cost benefits are obvious. And with longer road pavement life, there is less construction time and a decreased need to use materials (fuels and asphalt) derived from finite petroleum resources. Asphalt Preservation using Gilsonite sealer is a proactive strategy that will extend lengthens the life of our roads by using timely, cost-effective preservation processes. Climate, weather, storms, traffic and everyday wear and tear attack our roads since right from day one. US Federal Highways Administration data shows average pavement service life before reconstruction activity is now only 8.5 years. And up to 80% of pavement flexibility disappears in five years. At this point in the aging process, there is significant irreversible damage.

Gilsonite Sealer Usage in Airfields

The US Asphalt Institute reports that over 90% of airfield pavement failure is a result of oxidation and exposure to the environment. Oxidation causes small, medium and large stones to come loose and then damage passing aircraft, and in some cases cause severe damage. When Gilsonite Sealer Binder applications are chosen, FOD (foreign object damage) is eliminated and pavement deterioration is held in check for many years. In the USA Gilsonite Sealer has been successfully installed on nearly 40 million square yards of airfield pavements without accident or incident. Gilsonite Sealer is engineered to eliminate FOD in one simple application and has been successfully applied to nearly 40 million square yards of airfield pavements including “grooved” and “OGFC” (open graded friction course) runways without compromise to pavement design for rapid water runoff. Gilsonite Sealer is designed especially for airfield pavements where oxidation and aging are serious problems and where friction is critical for public safety. Gilsonite Sealer and binder not only preserves the binder in your runway but soaks down into the pavement surface where it will do the most good. Gilsonite sealer is not a thick layer on top of runway and apron surfaces like slurry coatings that unravel and peel. When snow plows scrape away the snow from other coatings, they often create FOD. Gilsonite Sealer penetrates into runway surfaces and glues everything back together from the inside out. Friction and safety is maintained or improved by simultaneously applying sharp angular micro friction materials during the installation process. Friction materials are thus bonded into the Gilsonite Sealer Binder creating micro-texture and insuring friction stays where it has to be in the FAA maintenance bulletins. The experts’ advice and your wisest investment is to establish a sound preservation strategy for your airfield pavements. A good strategy will forestall costly, premature deterioration, major repairs, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. Preservation extends airfield pavement’s useful life-cycle and minimizes disruption to airfield operations and user delays. Using Gilsonite Sealer to keep your pavements in good condition will give you a higher level of service for a longer period of time.

Gilsonite Sealcoating

Gilsonite Sealcoating

Unlike water based sealers, this asphalt sealer will not be damaged by freezing weather, nor will it wash off if caught by a rain shower before completely dry. This is a penetrating asphalt-based sealer that resaturates and rejuvenates asphalt surfaces, forming a lustrous jet black finish.

Research conducted by both The Asphalt Institute and The National Center For Asphalt Technology (NCAT) has scientifically proven that seal coating will greatly preserve and thereby, extend the life of hot mix asphalt pavements. High-quality sealants product will produce these results in the following ways:

  • Prevents surface water from penetrating older, more porous pavements, which have become weathered or cracked.
  • Coats and bonds loose aggregate particles in the pavement surface, which occurs as part of the normal wear process.
  • Slows oxidation by protecting the surface from the sun’s ultra violet rays, which dry out the asphalt’s natural oils and binders causing premature cracking.
  • Helps to resist the damaging effects of automotive leaks and spills such oil, gasoline, and other chemicals.
  • Restores your Pavement’s original satiny black finish, enhancing your home or business’ curb appeal.

There is a product that we frequently see applied to hot mix asphalt pavements and therefore, must be mentioned. That product is oil based and is generically referred to as “gilsonite”. “Gilsonite” is a pavement rejuvenator.

“Gilsonite” is formulated to effect the pavement in a completely different manner than a “true sealant” such as Seal coal tar emulsion. “Gilsonite” penetrates through the surface of the pavement and helps to restore its resiliency by “rehydrating”.

This driveway coating protects against moisture and frost damage – your pavement’s worst enemies. It also resists fuel, oil, and chemical staining. Asphalt-based sealcoating products are better for air quality because they do not emit high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like the coal tar-based products do. They also smell better and are less of a skin irritant.

Benefits of Gilsonite Sealer and Binder

  • Longer life cycle, lower cost of road and runways
  • Reduces road closure and downtime
  • Penetrates – maintains shape and grooves
  • Preserves pavement flexibility, elasticity, and strength
