It is a cost-effective additive with unmatched performance.<\/p>\n<h2>Evaluation of Gilsonite-modified asphalt mixtures<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cost-effective additive improves strength, reduces rutting and cracking<br \/>\nGilsonite has been used as an additive to enhance the performance of asphalt pavements for more than <span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">100<\/span> years. While field experience had demonstrated the advantages of using Gilsonite, the unique properties of Gilsonite-modified asphalt had not been well-documented due to the lack of a comprehensive evaluation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, a <span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">2015<\/span> study by the Western Regional Superpave Center at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Nevada, Reno, thoroughly analyzed various asphalt pavements using the latest advancements in materials testing, pavement modeling, and life-cycle analysis.<\/p>\n<h3>Key points of the study<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The evaluation was conducted under rigorous standards:<br \/>\n&gt; An independent supplier provided control samples and Gilsonite-modified versions of two performance grades (PG) of Asphalt: PG<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">64-28<\/span>, indicating performance engineered for a pavement temperature range of <span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">64<\/span>\u00b0C to &#8211;<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">28<\/span>\u00b0C; and PG<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">76-16<\/span>, designed for a pavement temperature range of <span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">76<\/span>\u00b0C to &#8211;<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">16<\/span>\u00b0C.<br \/>\n&gt; All asphalt binders met the applicable state highway agencies\u2019 specifications based on the Superpave PG System for Asphalt Binders.<br \/>\n&gt; The optimum binder content (OBC) of each asphalt mixture was identified by following the Superpave Volumetric Mix Design Method.<br \/>\n&gt; Laboratory equipment included the industry recognized Asphalt Mixture Performance Tester (AMPT).<br \/>\n&gt; The engineering properties of the asphalt mixtures were measured at their OBCs in terms of the dynamic modulus E* master curve.<br \/>\n&gt; The following performance characteristics of the asphalt mixtures were evaluated:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Resistance to rutting in terms of the Flow Number<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Resistance to thermal cracking in terms of fracture temperature and fracture stress<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Resistance to fatigue cracking in flexural bending<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Quantifying performance<\/h4>\n<p>Gilsonite has long been used to increase the performance of asphalt binders. Now, the respected study has documented its advantages.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Superpave PG characteristics used in testing<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Superpave Performance Grading (PG) system uses the rheological properties of the asphalt binder to identify its performance under the prevailing environmental conditions at the location of the project. Tests showed that the OBC was comparable for control samples and Gilsonite modified samples. The PG<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">64-28<\/span> mixtures required the addition of hydrated lime in order to meet moisture sensitivity specifications. The addition of Gilsonite to the PG<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">64-28<\/span> mixture resisted the tertiary flow at <span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">48<\/span>\u00b0C (<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">118<\/span>\u00b0F). The Gilsonite-modified PG<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">76-16<\/span> sample showed cracking at <span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">2<\/span>\u00b0C warmer than specifications. Initial flexural stiffness was measured at the <span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">50<\/span>th load cycle. Fatigue failure was defined as the number of cycles corresponding to a <span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">50<\/span>% reduction in the initial stiffness.<br \/>\nFigures below compare the fatigue models of mixtures. The cycles-to-failure tests showed similar results for the PG<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">76-16<\/span> control and Gilsonite modified samples. In the PG<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">64-28<\/span> mixtures, the control sample exhibited slightly higher fatigue relationships than the Gilsonite mixture. It should be noted, however, that the calculated values do not account for the effect of the much higher E* in the Gilsonite-modified binder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fatigue cracking models for the PG<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">76-16<\/span> and PG<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">64-28<\/span> mixtures at <span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">70<\/span>\u00b0F<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Testing at the right time<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thermal cracking and fatigue cracking are later pavement life failures, generally occurring after five years. Test mixtures were aged accordingly.<\/p>\n<h3>Mechanistic analysis assesses effect of actual conditions<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition to sophisticated laboratory tests, the university\u2019s evaluation included mechanistic analysis. A lab test designed to compare the fatigue cracking models of two asphalt mixtures only assesses the relative behavior of the mixtures without any indication on their relative impacts on pavement life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main advantage of the mechanistic analysis is its ability to combine the engineering property of the asphalt mixture (E*) with its rutting and fatigue cracking characteristics to determine the true impact of traffic loads on pavement life. The analysis evaluated thin pavements \u2013 &lt;<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">4<\/span>\u201d asphalt cement (AC) layer and 8\u201d crushed aggregate base (CAB) layer \u2013 and thick pavements \u2013 <span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">6<\/span>\u201d AC layer and <span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">12<\/span>\u201d CAB layer. Dynamic conditions included the heavy load imposed by a legally loaded <span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">18<\/span>-wheeler traveling at <span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">60<\/span> mph (<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">96<\/span> kph) without any braking, and traveling at 10 mph (<span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">16<\/span> kph) with braking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The mechanistic analysis of rutting resistance demonstrated that the Gilsonite-modified mixtures had ten times the projected pavement life in every instance except one. Under braking, there is a significant re- distribution of the vertical loads among the axles and the development of significant horizontal loads at the tire\/pavement interface.
